University Financing Law: teachers marched to Congress

The meeting held by the UBA and Conadu took place between 1:30 and 4 p.m. in front of Congress. The law has already been partially approved by the House of Representatives and the Government has stated that it will veto it if it is able to advance.

The Teachers’ Union Association of the University of Buenos Aires (AGD-UBA), together with the National Federation of University Teachers, Researchers and Creators (Conadu), held a mobilization today in front of the Congressbetween 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.

The main objective was to claim for the sustained financing of national universitiesits protection and also the wage recomposition for higher education personnel. The conflict impacted 61 public universities across the country and intensified with the latest days of protest and mobilization.

The call took place in the midst of a 48 hour strikewhich began this Wednesday, and while the Senate was debating the University Financing Actwhich has already been partially approved by the House of Representatives, and the Government has stated that it will veto it if it manages to overcome the legislative process.

“We are not going to approve a law that implies a fiscal deficit,” said the Chief of Staff, Guillermo Francos. The strike and the mobilization are a resource to repeat the request to the legislators to give their definitive support to the law, whose objective is to guarantee the budgetary guaranteesboth in salaries and in the expenses required by national universities.

What the law proposes and how the strike continues

The project of University Financing Act presented by the Radical Civic Union (UCR), has as its central point to declare the budget emergency of the national university system for next year.
