Every September 16th, World Day for Responsible Consumption of Alcoholic Beverages is celebrated, a proposal by the WHO that aims to raise awareness and prevent, so that consumers contribute to maintaining a responsible attitude towards the consumption of any alcoholic beverage and seeks to promote a concept of healthy living.

Wine is part of Argentine culture, declared a National Beverage (Law 26,870) which, consumed in moderation, has beneficial properties for health, generates sources of work and development in the country. Bodegas de Argentina, the chamber of local wine industry companies, is subscribed to the Wine in Moderation program, an initiative born in Europe, tailored to each culture and country where it is presented, to adapt the messages and make them more effective. Argentina is the first non-European country to join the program.
The basis is awareness and education around responsible consumption, highlighting the cultural aspects of wine such as: being part of the family and friends’ table, its association with a healthy diet and its general benefits. Always with the focus on enjoyment, hand in hand with moderation and care.

In the context of conscious and responsible consumption, wineries are beginning to offer innovative proposals and join the international trend of producing low-alcohol wines to provide options to consumers seeking a healthier life. Such is the case of Susana Balbothe winery of the first female winemaker in Argentina, which is presenting the second label oriented towards responsible consumption and presents its Crios Sustentia Chardonnaya new low-alcohol wine that joins Crios Sustentia Pinot Gris.

“As a winery that constantly pursues innovation, we believe it is important to offer products that respond to consumers who are more interested in health care and are more conscious of their diet,” explains Ana Lovaglio Balbo, Marketing Director of the winery. “Our Crios Sustentia sub-line is oriented towards responsible consumption and ecological awareness. Under this premise, we offer a Pinot Gris and a Chardonnay, which have between 8 and 9 degrees of alcohol, which is why they are considered ‘light wines’. They are low in alcohol by Argentine standards, where due to our climate we easily reach levels above 13 and even 15 degrees, both in whites and rosés – and even more so in reds.”
Susana Balbo is a winery known for the importance of white and rosé wines in its portfolio. This is its distinguishing feature: while the production of wines of this style is around 15% in the Argentine industry, this number rises to 30/40% (depending on the vintage) in the case of this winery.
“For the production of our low-alcohol wines, the most important thing is the point of harvest, when the sugar and acidity levels of the grapes are optimal. It is done early, during the first week of February, which allows us to obtain a must with a low concentration of sugar and, consequently, a wine that is naturally light in alcohol and that incorporates fewer calories in the diets of wine lovers,” explains Sebastián Gava, Susana Balbo’s Winemaker. “The new Chardonnay is light and refreshing. Its balanced acidity highlights its freshness. The resulting wine is very elegant, it can be paired with various dishes,” explains the winemaker and adds about the other label that “Pinot Gris is a variety that develops very fine aromas and a very balanced acidity that allows us to produce elegant, fresh and very versatile wines gastronomically speaking.”
