Tomorrow begins the 72nd San Sebastian International Film Festival. Over the course of ten days they will appear Johnny Depp, Monica Belluci, Javier Bardem, Cate Blanchett, Pamela Anderson (one-off), Isabelle Huppert, Angela Molina, Franco Nero, Lupita Nyong’o, Tilda Swinton, Charlotte Rampling, directors Pedro Almodóvar, Jacques Audiard, Leos Carax, Costa-Gavras, Mike Leigh, Francois Ozon, Paolo Sorrentino and, among others, Walter Salles.
Interesting detail: in what constitutes a curious record, This year, six Argentines were invited as members of the same number of juries. Thus, the writer Leila Guerriero The Official Jury, which is quite young this year, includes the directors Eduardo Crespo, Santiago Loza and Albertina Carri They are respectively part of the New Directors, Zabaltegi Tabakalera and Nest (short films by film students).
The curator Flor Schapiro is among the three that decide the award for Best Project of the Europe-Latin America Co-production Forum, and the critic Fernando Juan Lima presides over the Horizontes Latinos Jury, which is perhaps the most important section after the Official one. It is understandable that the designation of Lime (who until recently was in charge of the Mar del Plata Film Festival) and others mentioned It is also a declared international support for our film people in these difficult times.
On purpose, “Given the exceptional situation that Argentine cinema is experiencing due to the paralysis of projects and lack of support from the Government”the Festival will dedicate what is called a special Focus of several meetings with companies that can lend a hand (the Argentine businessman collaborates in the organization Gabriel Hochbaum).
There will also be a day of public support at the entrance to the Kursaal, which is the busiest space on those days. That will be next Tuesday.coinciding with the premiere of the dramatic comedy “The man who loved flying saucers”starring Leo Sbaraglia.
“The man who loved flying saucers”of Diego Lermancompetes in the Official Section, and is inspired by the pranks of the television journalist Joseph of Zerwhich reached up to 50 rating points with invented news about UFOs and haunted houses, but deep down I would have liked the UFOs to really appear.
In this section also participates “The Cry”a Spanish-Argentine horror co-production directed by Pedro Martin Calerowhich will then go to the Sitges Fantastic Film Festival. Here they have to compete with the new ones Gia Coppola, Costa-Gavras, Maite Alberdi, Mike Leigh, Iciair Bollain, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, François Ozon and eight more, including Audrey Dwanwhich presents a new version of the 70s erotic classic “Emmanuelle” (for the first time, a version directed by a woman).
As usual, the Horizontes Latinos section is the strong area for Argentine productions: out of 14, there are five, and in three of the remaining ones our country participates as co-producer. In detail, “The scent of freshly cut grass” (Celina Murga). “Prisoners” (Lola Arias)), “Simon of the Mountain” (Federico Luis), “The Jockey” (Luis Ortega)), “More people die on Sundays” (Iair Said)), and co-productions “When the clouds hide the shadows” (Chile, starring Maria Alche). “Sleeping with open eyes” (Brazil, with Nahuel Perez Biscayart) and “Maybe what they say about us is true” (Chili).
The other section is Tabakalera, where the most unusual works are displayed. In this case, “How to be a Pehuén Father” (Federico Luisshort related to its long “Simon of the Mountain”), “Big Shadow” (Maximiliano Schonfeldon the recovery of the Chaná language in Entre Ríos and the simultaneous forgetting of the dialect brought by the Germans from the Volga) and “Collective Monologue” (Jessica Sarah Rowlandthe understanding between semi-wild animals and the humans who care for them).
Jessica Sarah Rowlandthe Anglo-Argentine artist and author of this latest work, has just inaugurated in San Sebastian a video installation entitled “Extramission. Capturing Luminous Eyes””, which will then be taken to the Rotterdam International Film Festival.
In a separate paragraph, tomorrow at the same Tabakalera, a public conversation will take place between two great casting directors, the American Francine Maislerwho worked with Greta Gerwig, Gus Van Sant, Terrence Malick, Gomez Inarritu and Paul Greengrassamong others, and Argentina Maria Laura Berchkey in the selection and preparation of the cast of “The Snow Society” and many national films, such as “The robbery of the century”, “At the end of the tunnel”, “Reloca”, “Aballay, the man without fear”, “The wind that ravages”, “Wakolda”etc.
More Argentine films. In special screenings, “Transfers”a documentary co-produced with Uruguay about the so-called “death flights”. Its director, Nicolas Gil Lavedrawill later participate in a colloquium on the subject. And in the Children’s Section, the drawing “Robotia”of Diego Cagide and Diego Lucero.
Projects
There are also six Argentine projects selected in the Europe-Latin America Co-production Forum, one as co-producer in the Basque affairs section. Ikusmira Berriak (“Impunity”Chile-Argentina) and two half-finished projects in Work In Progress Latam.
For the Wip Latam Industry Award and the Egeda Industry Award they compete “The Message” (Ivan Funda girl survives by communicating with animals), “Muña Muña” (Paula Morela love story between a nurse and a tourist), as well as the co-production with Uruguay “A loose end” (Daniel Hendlerproblems of, precisely, a police corporal who is ordered to move).
The Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum begins on Monday. Among various projects from half the continent, “Desert Animals” (Santiago Loza)), “The Spirit of the Law” (Natalia Meta), “The Hedgehogs” (Victoria Galardi), “The Heavy School” (Hernán Roselli) and “The Two Landscapes” (Francisco Lezama). The fate of each of them depends on finding producer partners abroad, since it is difficult for them to obtain official credits in the country.
Finally, in the Made in Spain section, with mostly Iberian productions, a Spanish thriller appears, “Little girl”of Andrea Jaurrietawhere the woman of the title returns to her town with a gun in her purse and the fixed idea of taking revenge on a man, until she meets Dario Grandinetti. We are unaware of the ending of this film, as well as of the current management of INCAA.
