Different multimodal transport unions of the country held a meeting this Thursday at the headquarters of Aeronauts in the Congreso neighborhood, where they formed a “National Transport Roundtable”which declared a “state of alert and mobilization” with the threat of a national strike included.
“The formed Roundtable launched a ‘State of Alert and Mobilization’ in response to the adjustment policy promoted by the Government for railway, commercial aviation, cargo and passenger transport, maritime and river activities. It also expressed its total solidarity with the struggle carried out by the aeronautical unions, and any other mode of transport that is systematically attacked to its detriment,” the newly formed union unit mentioned in a press release.
They also issued a statement in which they said: “Today we established the transport unit in action. Our axis is the defense of the sovereignty of the country that is represented in the National Routes, in the trains, seas, rivers and skies, in the face of the daily abuse that we see implemented by the Javier Milei’s government in every way. The right to strike is guaranteed by the Constitution and international bodies that regulate work, such as ILO Convention 87,” the unionists said in a statement released on Thursday.
The conclave defined a new meeting that will take place next week, with the objective of establishing a “General Fight Plan”, which does not rule out nationwide force measures.
The Board is made up of different unions that make up the Argentine Confederation of Transport Workers (CATT) and the General Union of Transport Workers Associations (UGATT)“We are united beyond our transport centres because this is what the political situation we are going through demands and which gave birth to this National Transport Roundtable,” the document concluded.
The Government targeted the aeronautical unions
“In a private company if you strike or complicate the operation, they throw you out“The intention is that this fate befalls those who make life difficult for thousands and thousands of Argentines with these measures,” said Manuel Adorni when announcing the government’s position on the forceful measures.
“Just as the pickets were cut, when no one believed it possible, Now we are going to bury the union pickets and the aeronautical caste“We are going to go all out against the aeronautical pickets,” he said.
In addition, the spokesman listed the “privileges” that the pilots of the flag carrier have. “Pilots can travel with themselves and their families on business class with one particularity: if there are no tickets available, the company is obliged to take off someone who has actually paid for the ticket. This costs Aerolíneas Argentinas, that is to say all Argentines, about 20 billion pesos“. Regarding expenses, he also detailed that the state company spends, on a monthly basis, “One billion pesos in taxis“.
Regarding the situation of the company’s workers, Adorni concluded: “They have been offered a voluntary retirement plan or program that no one has accepted. So, obviously, they are not that dissatisfied with the work situation, salaries, benefits and privileges.”
