In Thuringia and Saxony, the CDU is talking about cooperation with Sahra Wagenknecht’s alliance. The party leader is very skeptical.
CDU leader Friedrich Merz believes that coalitions with the Sahra Wagenknecht alliance in Thuringia or Saxony are “very, very, very unlikely,” he said. Merz said in Berlin in the evening that tolerance or other forms of cooperation might be conceivable. Nevertheless, his guiding principle is to prevent an AfD prime minister, Björn Höcke, from becoming Thuringia’s prime minister. He does not want to be accused of not having tried everything.
The BSW is currently the movement of a single woman who is not active in state politics in either Thuringia or Saxony. Regarding the BSW actors in the states, he said: “I don’t know what makes these people tick.” That is why he told the CDU politicians in both states that they should talk to the BSW. But there is one point that the CDU will not go along with, namely when it comes to positions against America and for Russia.
“I see no way to a peace process at the moment”
Merz expressed concern about the situation in Ukraine and said: “I do not believe that there is a way to get this peace process going at the moment.” Russia will only stop if further military action appears hopeless or if Kiev falls.
In the long term, Germany will have to support Ukraine militarily. “I believe that in the long term we have to defend freedom and peace from Russia and not with Russia.” That is a bitter realization. “There is no other option at the moment, at least as long as Putin and his regime are in office.”
