The US announced new sanctions against Iran’s petrochemical industry

The US government confirmed this Friday what the new sanctions against the iranian petrochemical industryin response to the October 1 attack on Israelthe second direct attack this year.”

The sanctions were announced by a statement from the Treasury Departmentand affect the entire sector, as well as around twenty ships and companies based abroadaccused of being involved in the transportation of Iranian oil and petrochemical materials.

The affected companies are mainly based in Chinaalthough they are also included two Emiratis and one Liberian. Furthermore, the ship owners, mainly located in Panama, Malaysia and the Marshall Islands, They are also in the spotlight.

The White House national security advisor, Jake Sullivanassured that the announcement “was coordinated with allies and partners, several of whom will announce in the coming days their own measures to hold Iran accountable for its attacks.”

The American president, Joe Biden, agreed together with his peers from G7 in imposing new sanctions against Iran.

The objective of the measures is to increase financial pressure on Tehran and “limit the regime’s ability to obtain the revenue necessary to destabilize the region and attack US partners,” as announced by the Treasury Department.

“Today’s sanctions target Iran’s efforts to direct revenue generated by its energy industry to finance deadly and disruptive activities. with serious consequences for the region and the world”declared the Secretary of the TreasuryJanet Yellencited in the statement.

These penalties imply the freezing of assets that the sanctioned companies own directly or indirectly in the United States, and prohibit US-based companies or US citizens from doing business with them, at the risk of being sanctioned in turn.

Sanctioned companies will also be affected as their ability to use the dollar in their transactions is limited.

Iran’s attack on Israel

The sanctions are in response to what happened on October 1, when Iran launched about 200 missiles at Israel in retaliation for the assassination of the head of the Palestinian movement Hamas in Tehran, attributed to Israel, from the head of the Hezbollah Lebanese and a general of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in an Israeli attack near Beirut.
