15 years after Charly García’s “Underwater Concert”: the return of the idol

The day the national rock icon gave a show at the Vélez stadium after a long hospitalization for health problems and under torrential rain

It was October 23, 2009. The iconic Charly García turned 58 years old and celebrated it in Jose Amalfitani Stadium. However, in addition to the musician there was another protagonist: the rainwhich was the ideal setting for a show that was immortalized on the album: ““Underwater concert”.

“This is the world’s first underwater concert”García expressed so that the 40 thousand people who attended Vélez would explode. It was Charly’s return to the stage, after having been admitted first to a neuropsychiatric hospital and then to the house of Palito Ortega.

Like this week, in Buenos Aires we were living a summer in the middle of spring, until the rain came to alleviate the temperature. The water caused production to cancel some special effects from the show, but the show was made, and became legendary.

The band was made up of “Black” Carlos García López on the guitar, Hilda Lizarazu in the choirs, “Little Fox” Vön Quintiero on keyboards, who played under an improvised awning of nylon bags, and the Chilean trio made up of Antonio Silva (battery), Kiuge Hayashida (guitar) and Carlos González Vázquez (low).
