The objective of a multi-energy company: to provide more energy with fewer emissions

TotalEnergies, present in 120 countries with more than 100,000 employees worldwidecelebrates this year its 100th anniversary. These 100 years are a special occasion to value our history and pioneering spirit, both worldwide and in Argentina.

Our production is balanced between both basins: Neuquén and southern, onshore and offshore. With a current operated production of 35 MMm3 of gas daily, 90% of our production is natural gasallowing us to be the first private production operator in the country, to which we contribute the 25% of the gas produced nationally and We lead the export market. Today the subsidiary has about 1,000 employees.

Why we are a multi-energy company

With the same pioneering spirit that marked our beginnings, TotalEnergies is transforming into a multi-energy company committed to providing more reliable, affordable and sustainable energy to as many people as possible.

With this vision, we carry out a strategy based on 2 pillars: the production of hydrocarbons, on the one hand, and the development of an integrated generation activity with presence throughout the value chain, building a world-class competitive portfolio that combines flexible assets and renewable energy.

By 2050 we project ourselves with a portfolio of energy products where 50% will be electricity, 25% will continue to be fossil fuels (because we know that they will continue to be in demand), where we will dedicate ourselves mainly to gas, and a 25% decarbonized molecules (biomass and H2).

Our central objective is to provide more and better energy, with fewer emissions. Thinking forward, We have the ambition to continue positioning our company as a leading company in this transition.

Regarding decarbonization, The objective is to reduce Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 40% (that is, those that we produce through our activity and the indirect ones that are produced by the energy that we need to produce) by 2030 compared to 2015 and reach zero net emissions by 2050 together with society. In Aguada Pichana Este, province of Neuquén, we are implementing the electrification of the plant, building a high voltage line to connect it and supply it with dedicated green energy (“Amanecer” solar park). And in Tierra del Fuego, we are developing a hybrid system with wind energy.

In turn, methane (CH4) is one of the main challenges for the oil and gas industry, since it is a gas typical of hydrocarbon production and has a very important effect on global warming. For this TotalEnergies in Argentina has been implementing successful initiatives to meet its objectives in reducing these emissions in its operations.

Reducing emissions requires the implementation of specific projects for this purpose. In this sense, TotalEnergies developed the technology AUSEA (Airborne Ultralight Spectrometer for Environmental Applications) and carries out permanent aerial measurement campaigns in the 5 plants it operates in the Neuquén Basin and the Austral Basin.

The launch of the Fénix project

With a investment of US$700 million, we work in the launch of the Fénix project in the Cuenca Marina Austral-1 consortium, operated together with our partners Pan American Energy and Harbor Energy.

The successful development of this deposit in such a remote place and under extremely difficult sea conditions represented a great challenge that we faced with great pride together with all the subsidiary teams made up of geologists, geophysicists, project engineers and drilling engineers, among others. others.

Days before gas production begins and after four years of studies, construction and installation, Energy Report landed in Fénix and toured the drilling rig and the 4,800-ton platform, installed 60 kilometers off the coast of Tierra del Fuego .

Fénix is very important, since it means an increase in the supply and availability of gas for Argentina from the end of 2024. At its peak production in early 2025, it will reach 10 million m3/dallowing supply domestic demand, substitute imports and contribute to the regional export market.

Furthermore, that gas that will be extracted from Fénix will be conditioned with local labor and injected into the General San Martín gas pipeline, supplying the national value chain until reaching the consumption points in the main urban centers of the country.

Thanks to the application of advanced technology, natural gas production will have very low greenhouse gas intensity, approximately half of the average we reach worldwide in 2023.

The importance of social sustainability

In addition to the environmental pillar, the sustainability of a project has a central social axis with the communities linked to our operations.

We support our social management actions through its three axes, dialogue, impact management and social investment. In Argentina we redirect our strategy to local realities based on the emerging information that we obtain from listening and permanent dialogue with the communities, adapting to the expectations and needs identified.
