Lady Gaga She has become the third artist to achieve multiple number one songs in three different decades.
The achievement comes when your collaboration with Bruno Mars, “Die With A Smile”finally reached the top spot on the Billboard charts, almost five months since it was first released.
The song, which arrived in August, was written to feel like it was the “super 70s” and inspired by the collaborations between Carole King and James Taylor. It debuted at number three and remained at the top of the charts for months, frequently blocked by “Tipsy (A Bar Song)” of Shaboozeywhich didn’t reach number one.
Now, with all the Christmas songs off the charts, “Die With A Smile” has reached the first position after 20 weeks on the charts. This, Billboard notes, means that the singer has become part of a very select group of artists who have achieved multiple chart-topping songs in three different decades.
Until now, the only two artists who had achieved such a feat were Michael Jacksonwho had multiple number one hits in the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, and her sister Janet Jacksonwhich he did in the 80s, 90s and 10s.
In Gaga’s case, two songs that topped the charts around the time of her debut in 2009 were “Just Dance” and “Poker Face”which reached number one. In the 2010s, he took pole position with “Born This Way” from 2011 and with the 2019 duet with Bradley Cooper “Shallow”. In the 2020s, he has achieved two number one hits, the first of which was the 2020 collaboration with Ariana Grande titled “Rain On Me” and now with “Die With A Smile”.
As Stereogum points out, there are countless artists who have topped the charts over three decades, but very few have had more than one in each of those 10-year spans.
Paul McCartneyfor example, didn’t release his first chart-topping single as a solo artist until 1971, meaning it would only qualify for the chart if he could include his ’60s work with The Beatles.
Similarly, Madonna I would need one more Number One in the ’00s to qualify, Britney Spears she would have to have more than one Number One in the ’90s to be chosen, and Stevie Wonder would need one more song at the top of the charts in the ’60s.
