Wild boar attacks have become a recurring problem for agricultural producersespecially in areas like Tandil, where losses are in the millions. Daniel Barcelonna, local producer, recently reported a new episode that affected a silobag with approximately 240,000 kilos of wheat.

“How well we started the year,” he expressed ironically on his social networks along with images of the damage caused by these animals. According to the producer, the wild boars punctured the bag, which exposed the cereal to air, humidity and insects, deteriorating its quality. In addition, he highlighted that the recovery of the cereal, the repair of the bags and the prevention of future attacks demand time and resources.

A pest that is difficult to control

The wild boar, introduced in Argentina in 1905 as a hunting species, has become a major problem due to its rapid reproduction and nocturnal habits. A female can have babies at six months and reproduce rapidly, leading to an exponential increase in the population. Furthermore, its ability to adapt in areas with grasslands and mountains, such as Tandil, complicates its detection and control.

According to a report from the Ministry of the Environment and the FAO, this species generates annual losses of 1.38 billion dollars in the country. In addition to the economic impact, it also contributes to the transmission of diseases such as trichinosis and affects native fauna.

Measures in other regions

In Entre Ríos, where considerable damage is also recorded, the provincial Senate declared the wild boar, the bighorn pig and the axis deer as pests. This regulation authorizes hunting for population control purposes and establishes a regulatory framework for licenses, seasons and quotas.

Demands from the sector

Producers and rural associations request the implementation of coordinated strategies to mitigate the impact of wild boars. Among the proposals, the use of electric fences, greater authorization for controlled hunting and awareness campaigns about the risks of meat without sanitary control stand out.

The case of Barcelona highlights the magnitude of the problem and the need for urgent measures to protect agricultural production and preserve the environmental balance in the country.
