Alec Baldwin sues ‘Rust’ prosecutors for defamation

The actor accuses the Santa Fe district attorney of obtaining false testimony and withholding evidence, among other charges.

Alec Baldwin sued New Mexico prosecutors who charged him with involuntary manslaughter in fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in 2021 on the set of the western movie rust.

The district attorney of Santa Fe, Mary Carmack-Altwiesthe special prosecutor Kari Morrissey and the investigators of the “Rust” case are accused of malicious prosecution, defamation and civil rights violations in the lawsuit filed by the actor this Thursday and reported by the Associated Press agency.

“The defendants, acting under the color of the law, conspired to obtain a baseless indictment against Baldwin and to maliciously provoke or promote the trial and conviction, thereby violating Baldwin’s constitutional rights through their improper use of the criminal process.”the lawsuit states.

“The defendants sought everywhere to make Baldwin a scapegoat for the acts and omissions of others, without regard to the evidence or the law,” it continued.

Justice dismissed the case against Alec Baldwin

Last October, a New Mexico judge upheld the decision of dismiss manslaughter charge brought against Baldwin based on allegations that police and prosecutors withheld evidence from Baldwin’s lawyers.

The evidence in question was a cache of bullets that had been turned over to investigators and which, Baldwin’s lawyers argued, could have provided information about how real bullets were present on the set and had found their way to the gun Baldwin was holding.

Criminal proceedings are supposed to aim at the search for truth and justice.not the search for personal or political benefits or the harassment of innocent people,” Baldwin’s lawyers, Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro, said in a statement. “Kari Morrissey and the other defendants violated that basic principle again and again and trampled on Alec Baldwin’s rights. We present this action to hold defendants accountable for their misconduct and prevent them from doing this to anyone else.”
