A far-right party convention Alternative for Germany (AFD) It was delayed by protests this Saturday, while it and other major parties launch their campaigns for the general elections next month. It happened in the town of Riesa and the candidacy of the co-leader is expected Alice Weidel.
Weidel He condemned the maneuver once the event began, which ended up happening: “Not even the self-proclaimed defenders of democracy could prevent it,” he said on his X account. AFD is the second force in the polls ahead of the February 23 elections.
The protests began at dawn and their promoters managed to temporarily block the B169 highway along with other interruptions through the police cordons.
An AFD convention was interrupted by protesters
The organizers of the protests form an alliance against the right known as ‘Widersetzten’. They claimed on their X account that they had managed to “block almost all access to the AfD congress.”
The Police estimate that up to 10,000 protesters from all over Germany participated in today’s protests in approximately 200 buses. The conference was scheduled for 10 in the morning (local time) and was delayed by at least 45 minutes due to difficulties in accessing the room.

In these Minuten startet der 16.

A spokesman for the AfD, Bernd Baumann, described the protesters as “extremists” in statements to the Phoenix network. On the other hand, they reported that The Police had carried out an “escalation of violence” by blocking an authorized demonstration, with about 4,000 participants according to the organizers, using water cannons and pepper spray.
At the event, the co-leader’s candidacy for the chancellorship is expected to be ratified. Alice Weidel. Some 600 delegates of the formation will meet this weekend, with polls that are over 20% of voting intentions, behind the conservative CDU – CSU bloc (30%) and ahead of the Social Democrats of Chancellor Olaf Scholz (15%).
Beyond the polls, can AFD have a place in German power?
Although the party is in second place, with its 20% support, it is suspected that Weidel has no real chance of becoming the country’s leader since other formations refuse to work with AfD.
The conservative opposition bloc, the Union, leads the polls with around 30% of voting intentions and its candidate, Friedrich Merzis the favorite to become the next chancellor.
Center-left Chancellor Olaf Scholz is hoping for a comeback to give him victory, but so far there has been little sign of significant change in polls that show support for the Social Democrats hovering between 14 and 17%.
