Within the framework of the World Economic Forum, Syngenta Group CEO Jeff Rowe announced the five trends in artificial intelligence (AI) that will have a full impact on the agriculture during 2025. Presented during a panel discussion, they described how this technology that is increasingly gaining ground will revolutionize the sector, from the laboratory to the field.
Rowe stated: “AI and digital tools are revolutionizing agriculture and sustainable practices. Advanced monitoring systems integrate satellite imagery, drones and soil mapping to enable efficient crop management. Predictive analytics, powered by AI and machine learning, provides producers with actionable information, transforming reactive practices into proactive strategies“.
The five trends, revealed in the panel titled “From soil to Silicon Valley: How cutting-edge technologies are advancing the future of sustainable agriculture,” were listed by the CEO.
The 5 trends in artificial intelligence that will be key in agriculture
AI in Research and Development (R&D)
Today, at Syngenta, all research projects use machine learning models to identify new active ingredients, both for chemical and biological inputs.
AI in the field
The introduction of AI-driven systems to reliably monitor and predict soil health, generating high-resolution maps of soil nutrients, texture and carbon for growers.
AI in the hands of producers
Generative AI-enabled digital tools that act as agronomic advisors to help producers determine good crop management practices.
AI in pest management
Precision agriculture solutions and data-based decision making that accompany producers in the use of inputs only in the impacted areas.
AI in supply chain management
Demand forecasting, market prediction and reducing overproduction and food waste to optimize logistics and improve efficiency.
The importance of adopting technology
The synergy between digital technologies and sustainable agriculture accompanies producers in helping to mitigate climate change while improving productivity. By integrating regenerative practices with cutting-edge technology, andhe agricultural sector is paving the way for a resilient food systemwhich benefits both people and the planet, the speakers concluded.
Furthermore, the global AgTech market, valued at $24.19 billion in 2023, is expected to reach $54.17 billion by 2029 according to a recent report by AgriTech Market. The global AI market in the agricultural sector is projected to grow from US$1.7 billion in 2023 to US$4.7 billion by 2028, according to estimates from a recent market analysis, underscoring the great economic potential of these technologies. A WEF report estimates that digital agriculture could boost the GDP of the agricultural sector of developing countries by US$450 billion annually.
Finally, in a panel discussion with Suzanne DiBiancaexecutive vice president and Chief Impact Officer at Salesforce, both emphasized the need for collaboration between authorities, companies and other actors to reduce financial and technical barriers for producers who adopt technology.
Syngenta is a global leader in agricultural innovation, present in more than 100 countries. It develops agricultural technologies and practices that help producers carry out the transformation necessary to feed the world’s population, while preserving the planet.
