Wall Street returned to strong losses, after another rise in tariffs to China

The New York Stock Exchange collapsed this Thursday after the White House clarified that tariffs to China would now amount to 145%, which increases concern about the escalation of the commercial war between the United States and China. In this context, the Dow Jones index of industrialists dropped 2.50% to 39,593.66 points; The S&P500 lost 3.46% to 5,268.05 points and Nasdaq Composite depreciated 4.31% to 16,387.31 points.

The confirmation of the White House this Thursday that the tariffs imposed on Chinese imports now amount to 145%, it occurred a day after Trump announced in Truth Social that China faced “reciprocal” tariffs of 125% as retaliation to US tariffs.

The increase in pressure to China deteriorated the confidence in the actions 24 hours after Trump reported that reciprocal tariffs would be reduced to 10%, for countries that had not taken reprisals after April 2, “Liberation Day.”

China increased tariffs on US imports from 34% to 84% on Wednesday, in retaliation to the first increase in US tariffs imposed by Trump. These tariffs entered into force this Thursday morning.
