On New Year’s Eve morning it was announced that Joseph Ratzinger, who was born in Upper Bavaria, had died at the age of 95. Even though he significantly shaped the Catholic Church for decades, he did not manage to herald a turning point in his office. He was unable to fulfill the hopes and expectations that many Christians around the world had placed in his pontificate.
Rather, as Pope he remained true to his conservative ideals. With his surprising resignation in 2013, which impressed many people, he not only took a courageous step, but also made it clear that the Catholic Church needs to develop further.
