If you look at what has developed in the wine scene in the region east of Vienna over the last few decades, then you can report a tremendous sense of optimism. A long chain of top companies has long since manifested itself at the domestic and international top and shows what the cohesion of many winegrowers achieves.
The prerequisites for successful viticulture are optimal. The soil structures were shaped by the Danube over the course of thousands of years. Gravel erosion and barren stone soils with loess drifts mix with earthy, loamy sandy soils and sometimes also gravel soils. A mixed climate with warmth from the east, in combination with the pleasant climate of Lake Neusiedl, only 20 kilometers away, and the coolness from the northwest, results in an optimal aroma enrichment for the grapes in the vegetation phase.
Consequently, it has led to the leading companies in the area also deciding to adopt the controlled designation of origin DAC, true to the motto “origin beats variety”. Wines that have Carnuntum DAC on their label are either single-variety products made from Blauer Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, Grüner Veltliner and the Pinot varieties Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc. If it is a cuvée, the main part must be one of the grape varieties shown. For consumers, a clear definition of origin according to regional wines, local wines and vineyard wines has also been provided. Top companies in the area are also members of the Austrian traditional wineries and can therefore define the best qualified vineyards as 1ÖTW locations.
However, the RUBIN CARNUNTUM area brand in 1992 was decisive for the area’s top position today. In this way, it was possible to give the area a vinophile identity. Today, more than 40 winegrowers are members of this association, which market wines under the name Rubin Carnuntum DAC, which are a Blauer Zweigelt with a delicate use of wood. Elegance with fruitiness and typical character.
The sommeliers of the OÖNachrichten have decided to put the upcoming OÖN Wine Show under the motto “30 Years Rubin Carnuntum”. On March 10, 2023, this popular culinary evening will take place at the Gmundener Landhotel am Grünberg. Few places are still available.
