Argentine masters abroad: the potential of the country and reflections for our return

In an almost summer weekend, we met more than 200 Argentine Masters students from all over the world, this time, at the Columbia University headquarters.

A very interesting agenda, strengthening what we often hear or see: testimony of women or men in the roles of technical directors, soccer players, writers, tennis players, car racers, movies and actors, bypass inventors, world-renowned musicians, writers, artists, businessmen, entrepreneurs, Pope. Argentines and Argentines are everywhere and we are very good at what we are passionate about.

Passion was breathed at the meeting, among exhibitors from the private sector innovating in Argentina, the region or the world and leading markets and companies, as well as former officials or political leaders sharing space for conversation and views. We have achieved prominence in many things, and we continue to be so, even with the soccer world cup. But there is one matter in which we still have not found the formula, and that is how to move the country forward, but, above all, how to give it stability and predictability. Almost even leveling down, almost posing the least bad.

Argentina has indicators that hurt. The main one is poverty, the second is inflation, the third is education, and the fourth is insecurity. The formula is a comprehensive and holistic look, there is no independent variable that by itself can be modified and solved as a watertight compartment. Quite the contrary, interdependence makes the situation complex.

Young adults training outside the country at various universities and in various approaches to contribute their potential, their capacity and expertise in finding a space and agenda in New York, makes it breathe differently. At least for a weekend. The diagnosis is clear, the important thing is to learn from the process to achieve possible antidotes to promote virtuous ventures, businesses, projects, regulations and public policies that maximize our potential.

Some of the reflections that arise from the meeting:

Argentina has potential and has talent. In addition to passion and love for our culture, our ability to adapt and overcome adversity. Our culture of perseverance, curiosity and effort that make us stand out. In addition to listening and communication skills. We are so committed to what we do that even Malbec is our country brand, recently it was the world day.

Argentina has four main enginesI attribute the fourth to myself. The first is oil or mining, the second is gas, the third is lithium and the fourth is connectivity and the digital economy. We have the potential and possibilities to work and co-design plans between the private and public sectors that allow us to have a long-term vision, approximately 40 years. In addition to the potential and added value that other industries contribute today, such as agriculture.

There are solutions to mitigate and invest on climate change and carbon footprint. The world and many international credit organizations are moving their agenda towards financing projects that mitigate climate change. The process or protocol to be net zero would begin to be a requirement and to be regulated. Due to the discovery of an Argentine woman, CO2 can be converted into air. With CO2 you can transform salty sea water to be drinkable. It is one of the only proven methods with impact. The question is to transfer social responsibility or what is now called ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) to the agenda of companies, which is essential for reputation and also for the generation of profits that it pursues, but above all for the creation of shared value that the entrepreneurial role has in the society in which it is immersed. As well as regulations that make this virtuous circle possible.

In conclusion, why do we have so much passion, ideas, talent and abilities that do not always succeed within our country? It is essential to generate an orchestra concert, where the rules of the game, macroeconomics, auspicious norms and regulations are regularized, where the legislative and executive branches are updated to the leaps and innovations to which the private sector or entrepreneurs often arrive faster than the own state. To escalate creativity and opportunities to build long-term agendas and visions, and not with short-sighted views that, as we have already seen, its direct consequence is poverty, loss of purchasing power, loss of investment, loss of employment and inflation.

I am one of those many young adults who is not willing to see my country sink like this. I celebrate spaces for dialogue and inspiration like this one where conversation is the central tool for generating visions.
