Keys to managing changes in educational institutions

The increasing use of digital technologies is an opportunity to create new channels of communication, transaction, and bonding between families and schools.

The world is changing rapidly. One of the factors that contributes to this process is the advancement of digital technologies, which breaks into daily life in ways that were unthinkable until a few years ago.

In this sense, the education It is no stranger to these transformations. For this reason, managing change processes is a task that is increasingly present in schools around the world.

Why change? It is not about getting on a trend of digitizing everything, but about optimizing and automating processes that allow educational institutions to spend more time on their main work: accompany students in their learning process.

If we look at the data for the Tests Learn 2021 -latest available up to now-, it stands out that 8 out of 10 students state that they have Internet access at home (78.8%). If we segment these results by type of management, in privately run schools that percentage rises to 94.5%. We can then affirm that the increasing use of digital technologies is an opportunity to create new channels of communication, transaction and bonding between families and schools.

When we started with Acadeu, we set out not only to develop a product designed for education, but also one that would allow processes to be digitalized and made more efficient. We knew that it is a path that is somewhat complex and requires the participation of the entire educational community.

Since last year, when Educaria acquired Acadeu, we wanted to add the international experience of the largest operator of management systems in Latin America to facilitate this transformation. Within this framework, we believe that there are five keys to managing changes in school management:

  • Leadership and collaboration: every process of change needs an engine to move in the right direction. In a school, we usually take it for granted that it is the management teams who should do it, but the change does not depend on one person, but on a collective leadership that starts from a common purpose.
  • Assertive communication: As a complementary element to leadership, communication is essential so that the entire community understands the reasons for and the objectives of the change.
  • Accessibility: Choosing multiplatform solutions that facilitate access from different devices and at any time is essential, especially when dealing with interaction with families.
  • Accompaniment: Although we may have a more homogeneous community, we will always find diverse positions that sometimes conflict with the change processes. Reducing the level of resistance to change requires us to accompany the community in the way it needs. Informative meetings, training or tutorials are just some ideas that can contribute so that no one feels overwhelmed by the change.
  • Information for decision making: The traceability provided by digital platforms allows us to have more information about how our institution works. This allows us for the change process not only to incorporate technology, but also to improve the quality of care provided to both families and our community of teachers and students.

These keys help to understand that change processes are not just about incorporating the relevant technologies, but that they are collective transformations that depend on the work and collaboration of each member of our community.
