And again, the 1st place in the international wine competition “Vaihinger Löwe” goes to Austria, to Burgenland! Weingut Hufnagel, Neckenmarkt is the overall winner of the 31st competition for Lemberger and Blaufränkisch!

Since 2019, the Vaihinger Löwe has been in great demand among all winegrowers in the above-mentioned countries who are particularly dedicated to our flagship grape variety. Above all, the jury seems to like the Burgenland wine style a little more than those from the other countries participating in this competition.

“In 2023, 54 Burgenland wines and 119 German wines took part, as well as 10 wines from other wine-growing nations – a total of 183 wines were submitted,” reports Martin Fischer, 1st Chairman Weinlöwen e. V

Martin Fischer and Mara Walz, the chairmen of the Weinlöwen eV, chose this year’s overall winner of the international competition with the “Vaihinger Löwe” on May 6th, 2023. The Hufnagel winery from Neckenmarkt was able to convince the expert jury with its excellent 2018 Mittelburgenland DAC Reserve Blaufränkisch and thus secure the coveted trophy.

“Burgenland stands for quality at the highest level – this success shows us that once again. We are also unbeatable when it comes to value for money!” – So the statement of the lucky winner Hans-Jürgen (Hansi) Hufnagel. “I am very happy that the best Blaufränkisch in the Vaihinger Löwe competition comes from our house and that I was able to win the Austrian state and the overall international victory in Central Burgenland, the real Blaufränkisch region!”

The advantages of the centuries-old soil with all its diverse and complex taste come into their own in the winning wine. The winemaker supports all the naturalness with his skill and his philosophy of winemaking. It has become a strong wine with considerable aging potential, which – as the award won underlines – stands up to any international comparison.
