Recently a group of specialists and technological entrepreneurs at a global level requested a pause in the training of the most powerful Artificial Intelligence systems, including ChatGPTthrough an open letter signed by Elon Musk and other references. They consider that AI “is out of control” and requested that the generative artificial intelligence (IAG) laboratories stop training the most powerful systems for at least six months. They argued “profound risks to society and humanity.”
It is clear that these advances are inevitable and no one is being able to stop them effectively. Nevertheless, What are the real interests behind the request for a pause in the investigations and what position has the community specialized in artificial intelligence taken?
Some interpreted the Musk-led request as a “moratorium” on balance the unbridled competition of companies in the development of AIeven from those most disadvantaged companies and also as a certain dose of arrogance that implies placing democracy and decision-making rights in AI in just six months.
It is clear that all these discussions hint at discomfort inside and outside the industry with the breakneck pace of AI advancement. What position have governments and nations taken?
Open questions
One of the main questions put into play by generative artificial intelligence (IAG) models is how much of these processes and tasks can be automatable and whether IAG can replace humans in the short term. Questions also arise in the current discussion, such as the possibility that these technologies have of generate biased content (and its impact on fields such as politics, justice, environment, immigration, economy, etc.), ethical challenges (creativity and intellectual property) and the privacy.
At the same time, the impact on employment should be relativized if the possibility of AI to add value to processes that continue to position people and human teams at the center of said processes is taken into account. While the traditional view is that many jobs would be replaced by AI, the reality is that many of these positions will also be transformed and reinvented by AI, not lost.
It is not about doing the same with less people, but to do more and better, to produce with higher quality. It is there where AI shows its opportunities and competitive advantages. The key will be in the real and unsatisfied demand for these positions that require more training on these tools, including encourage creativity, innovation and teamwork.
Immediate answers on these problems are required and there are countless open discussions. It is clear that, even so, it is not about demonizing or glorifying the advances of AI and ChatGPT, because the benefits and risks are just around the corner. Know to what extent companies, organizations, governments and societies are prepared for these challenges and anticipate future opportunities, It is part of our greatest interests and concerns.
