only fair
Environmental and climate protection against the populist demand “Free travel for free citizens”: This is what the current conflict in London is all about, where older combustion cars are no longer allowed to drive into the “low emission zone” free of charge. A day ticket for “Stinker” for 14.50 euros has to be bought, so what?
That’s only fair, because climate sinners should pay. City dwellers worldwide suffer from traffic emissions. So why not limit the polluters and ask them to pay, when there have long been alternatives to individual car traffic with combustion engines (public transport, footpaths, electric vehicles)? Support for the socially disadvantaged who need the car is of course mandatory, keyword “climate justice”.

Money doesn’t stink
In principle, it is to be welcomed if city centers are freed from the stranglehold of the tin snakes. Creative traffic concepts would be required (attractive public transport, network of cycle paths…). Measures such as the arbitrary dismantling of streets and restrictive parking space management can also help, but are rather unimaginative. Branding old cars “stinky” and punishing them with fines is stupid and unfair. Stupid, because the environmental effect is negligible. Unfair because it affects people who are not driving an old car out of ignorance, but because they have no money for a new car. “Free travel for rich citizens” – such a priority rule really stinks.
