What weighs, it’s hot

Whoever stands in the southern Landstrasse in Linz does not think of a vacancy rate of 3.7 percent. He sees one empty shop after another. Due to its size, the state capital can rest on a good statistic: In some parts of the city, the picture is devastating, damaging the image as a business location.

Wels not only shows how a good event concept and committed vacancy management can revitalize the city center. Mayor Andreas Rabl also takes on one thing after the other: first the city center, in the coming years it will be the turn of the outer parts of the city. That would also be an approach for the large, diverse Linz that city politicians could copy.

CONS

apples and pears

Thinking outside the box can never hurt. Especially when it comes to revitalizing inner cities, the challenges facing politics are similar. But they are not identical. A panacea would be nice, but is unfortunately completely unrealistic. The center in Wels looks very different than in Linz, not to mention the difference in size between the cities. The starting point is also different, for example events in downtown Linz have a long tradition – unlike in Wels. Incidentally, there was also a vacancy manager in Linz before. The success? More than manageable. So Linz shouldn’t copy too much, but instead courageously break new ground – and thus become a role model itself.
