The Tatra 11 (left), introduced in 1923, was a sensation with its light weight, simple but robust construction and affordable price. The prototype Tatra V 570 (right), built according to a similar concept, but with a rear engine and an almost streamlined shape, looked very similar to Ferdinand Porsche’s later Volkswagen. Porsche admitted to looking over Ledwinka’s shoulder. He said that all designers had studied each other’s work.

Along with Siegfried Marcus and Ferdinand Porsche, he is one of the great Austrian car pioneers, and he shaped the time when vehicles suitable for everyday use were built instead of motor carriages. Hans Ledwinka, born in Klosterneuburg in 1878, is best known as the leading designer of the streamlined Tatra 77 (later 87 and 97), which still seems utopian and was tested in the wind tunnel, and whose successor models were still in production until the end of the communist era
