Global Compact: more than celebrating years, it is building a legacy

Global Compact Argentina is celebrating its 20 years of leadership in corporate sustainability in Argentina, in commemoration of the launch of the initiative on April 23, 2004.

More than 20 years ago, the then Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, invited the private sector and the United Nations to sign a Global Pact of shared values and principles, to give a human face to the market.

In Argentina, Global Compact landed in 2004with the expectation that companies would be willing to sign this commitment, and with the firm conviction of working on the 10 principles of the Global Compact in four areas: Human Rights, Labor Standards, Environment and Anti-Corruption.

Today, 20 years later, we can assure that the response of the private sector is overwhelming, Our community is made up of more than 900 organizations from almost all the provinces of the country. It is the most federal and largest sustainability movement in the country. At the same time, it is the connection with the development world and the link for companies with the United Nations.

Some data from the last year validate not only the constant work but also how the issue is permeating organizations: 40% of Argentine companies already measure their carbon footprint, and those that do not do so express a concrete interest in moving towards there. More than 40 companies have already incorporated human rights due diligence processes into their organizations. More than 60 companies participated in the accelerator programs last year.

More than 35 identified SDG 16 as a material issue and we put the term sustainable integrity on the table, which generates collaborative work between the compliance and sustainability areas, unifying criteria.

And the data that consolidates all of the above is that we have accumulated more than 800 reports all these years. Communication of progress is the main tool that the Global Compact provides for accountability with non-financial information that companies have. And it is the only instrument recognized by the United Nations as evidence of the contribution to the SDGs.

We have been promoting the sustainability agenda for 20 years, and that nourishes us with experience thanks to the path we have traveled, however, our sights are set on the future. In building a better place, where businesses establish objectives based on science, respecting planetary limits, that Human Rights are a reality for all people, a more just and inclusive society, with equal opportunities and personal and professional development.

We are going to celebrate big, taking the Global Compact to several cities. We create RED, weave ties and share all our experience and our vision. We want this celebration not to be ours, but to each of the people who make up our initiative.
