Javier Milei goes for a “Digital Reform of the State”: Artificial Intelligence, data collection and democracy?

Although Artificial Intelligence promises to be applied as a “neutral and unbiased truth”, it is still a human invention.

Milei met with representatives from Google, Apple, Meta, and Open AI in order to replicate this model in Argentina.

The president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, incorporated into the country a “Digital Reform of the State” through an agreement with Google, and Javier Milei seeks to copy the model. In recent months, the multinational opened physical offices in San Salvador to modernize public services. The purpose of this alliance is to digitize government projects and processes. Also intervene in administrative, health and educational areas.

Although this methodology began to be implemented in 2020, they currently plan to cover more areas, such as the incorporation of Google Distributed Cloud for storage, the creation of statistics, big data, machine learning and application development. This promises to have El Salvador’s regulatory and connectivity requirements.

Another proposal endorsed by Bukele is to incorporate Artificial Intelligence in the health area, so that doctors can access information to assist people in real time. There is also a proposal in education, for personalization of learning.

During his last trip to the United States, Milei met with representatives from Google, Apple, Meta, and Open AI in order to replicate this model in Argentina. However, although it began to be incorporated gradually and for some time now, there are no studies in this regard, nor audited results that guarantee the viability of its application.

Although the Artificial intelligence promises to be applied as a “neutral and unbiased truth”, it is still a human invention. According to Google, “it is a field of science” that is related to the creation of computers that have the ability to act, learn and reason similarly to human intelligence and “involves data whose scale exceeds what humans can analyze.” .

In general terms, since the incorporation of this technology into everyday life is so recent, there are many issues related to its use that are not proven with reliable facts or data.

On the other hand, the use of Google Distributed Cloud includes the storage of data that, after collection, becomes the property of the multinational company, which also has its interests within its business model and are not entirely explicit.

Although the stage of the meetings with the Argentine president is unknown, whether it is an evaluation or already a concrete agreement, the libertarian’s position is clear through his words: “I love being a mole within the State. I am the one who destroys the State from within”.

Within this “Digital Reform”, a large part of the responsibilities and decisions that in a democratic country correspond to representatives elected by citizen participation would be delegated to Artificial Intelligence. Will Google, through its AI, be in charge of legislating laws in the promising technological future that the La Libertad Avanza government envisions? That’s how they see it.
