Long live Balconia!
Get away and enjoy the southern lifestyle far away from home – that was my motto in the summer when I was younger. And it was really easy to do: I booked a flight to Greece, Spain or Sicily, looked for accommodation and the holiday could begin. Anyone who tries that today should arm themselves with a sleeping bag and a high frustration threshold. Because without a booking there are no more free rooms.
You also have to be prepared to fight for seats on beaches and in restaurants. No, holidays in the south are not what they used to be. That’s why I prefer to grill souvlaki at home and enjoy the summer in my hammock under the apple tree.

Off to the north
I too still dream of summer holidays in Greece in the 1990s: small taverns, tranquil villages, half-empty beaches, authentic atmosphere… Unfortunately, the idyll in many regions of southern Europe is over and you have to look for alternatives if you still want to travel in July and August. How about a castle tour through Silesia in Poland?
Sweden and Norway are also popular this year with many who are fed up with the constant heat. Our ideas of “summer vacation” will change in the coming years and, above all, will have to shift elsewhere. Because you have to travel to learn, as Mark Twain once said. But it doesn’t have to be the hotspots.
