Inflation: food prices in the suburbs rose 6% in August

In the eight months of the current government, the price of these foodstuffs has increased by 125.30%. In November of last year, the same family of four paid $182,905.48.

The food prices in 20 neighborhoods of Greater Buenos Aires increased 6% in August, according to a survey conducted by ISEPCI (Institute for Social, Economic and Political Research on Citizens).

Thus, a family of two adults and two children/youngsters, who in July needed $388,795.47 for cover their basic needs food, a month later he needed $23,285 more to buy the same products.

In the eight months of the current government, The increase in these foods reached 125.30%. In November of last year, the same family of four was eating adequately with $182,905.48. This August, they had to add $229,175.65 to their budget to maintain the same diet.

On the other handthe value of the Total Basic Basket (CBT) which, in addition to food, includes a set of goods and services essential for the functioning of people’s lives, rose by 8.63% in August, which is equivalent to an increase of $51,694, so that the family does not fall below the poverty line.

Among the items with the greatest increase, grocery products stood out, with higher increases (8.07%) than the other items, followed by fruits and vegetables (6.55%), and leaving behind – as in previous months – to meats, which rose 2.04%.

“The government’s narrative seeks to establish a downward inflationary expectation, but with significant increases in farinaceous and dairy products, the Basic Food Basket (CBA) rose by almost 6% in August. Despite the drop in sales and the general recession in the national economy as a whole, which produces massive closures of small businesses in the neighborhoods, increases in basic foodstuffs continue,” said Isaac Rudnik, author of the study.
