In 1986, she was part of the founding line of the organization. She is also the grandmother of the artist Carmen Sánchez Viamonte. After this incident, she retired and devoted herself entirely to searching for them. It was then that she met other women in the same situation who gathered together as Madres de Plaza de Mayo. In 1986, political differences led her to be one of the co-founders of the Association of Mothers of Plaza de Mayo Founding Line.
In 2022 she was declared an illustrious citizen by both the Deliberative Council of the city of La Plata and the Buenos Aires Legislature.and in 2023 she was recognized again by the provincial Legislative Branch for her outstanding career in the field of human rights.

The former president wrote: “Last night, the mother of Santiaguito Sánchez Viamonte passed away, my dear Herenia, a tireless fighter who finally achieved peace.” And she concluded: “Always in my heart and now with your beloved son” with a photo of the Mother of Plaza de Mayo.
Another political figure who joined the tribute messages was the governor of the province of Buenos Aires Axel Kicillof.
