Diana Mondino criticised the human rights situation in Venezuela before the United Nations

In her speech, the official from La Libertad Avanza (LLA) spoke on behalf of the Core Group and other adhering countries: “We wish to convey Our deep concern about the serious structural human rights crisis “that Venezuela is going through, which has been further accentuated in 2024 in the context of the recent electoral process. This includes the suspension of cooperation with the Office of the High Commissioner, among other issues.”

Mondino noted that “in the weeks following the July 28 elections, The human rights situation has worsened at an alarming rate: arbitrary arrests of opposition figures, journalists and protesters, including children, adolescents, women and people with disabilities, some of which may amount to enforced disappearances.”

He also referred to the “disproportionate use of force by law enforcement officers and armed civilian groups known as ‘collectives’; calls by the State to file complaints against those who participated in peaceful demonstrations; cancellation of passports of journalists and human rights defenders; as well as the judicial persecution initiated by the Venezuelan State against presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia.”

Mondino expressed his concern about the situation in Venezuela

The libertarian foreign minister expressed her concern about “the damage that these actions cause to the rule of law, democracy and respect for the civil and political liberties of the Venezuelan people, and which result in a deterioration of Venezuela’s obligation to respect and guarantee human rights.”

He added that “under the excuse of inciting hatred or under anti-terrorist legislation, “People who seek to exercise their political rights and their legitimate right to peaceful protest are persecuted, detained and deprived of their liberty.”

“Furthermore, we have witnessed actions aimed at persecuting children and adolescents, and we therefore firmly demand the obligation to ensure that they are treated in strict accordance with international standards for the protection of children,” she concluded.

Edmundo González Urrutia calls for “dialogue” and assures that he left Venezuela to change “things”

Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia, a rival of Nicolás Maduro in the disputed elections of July 28, called for “dialogue” and explained that he is exiling himself to Spain “so that things can change,” in a letter addressed to his compatriots after arriving in Madrid.

“Only the politics of dialogue can make us meet again,” The opposition politician wrote in this letter published in X and dated in Madrid, stating that his decision to go into exile was made “so that things can change” and to build “a new era for Venezuela.”

“It is a gesture that reaches out to everyone and I hope that it is reciprocated as such.”added the 75-year-old former diplomat the day after arriving in Spain with the help of Pedro Sánchez’s government. “I have made this decision thinking about Venezuela and that our destiny as a country cannot, should not be, a conflict of pain and suffering,” González Urrutia said. Hours before this letter, his press team released a voice message in which he promised to continue “the fight to achieve freedom and the recovery of democracy in Venezuela.”
