This Wednesday he entered the Chamber of Deputies the National Emergency Decree (DNU) 873/24, that declares to Argentine Airlines subject to privatization. Now it remains for the issue to be discussed in both chambers of Congress, which will have the final say.
The decree had been published this Tuesday night, in what was the first step in the management of Javier Milei to get rid of the state company, which had been left out of the list of companies to be privatized in the Law Bases.
DNU in Deputies Aerolíneas Argentinas Subject to privatization
The DNU that declares Aerolíneas Argentinas subject to privatization has already entered the Chamber of Deputies.
The foundations of the DNU that declares Aerolíneas Argentinas subject to privatization
The Government relied on Law No. 23,696, which establishes that to proceed with the sale of state companies, sThey must previously declare “subject to privatization” by the Executive Branch.
Likewise, they based the decision by referring to Decree No. 70/23, with which “a public emergency was declared in economic, financial, fiscal and administrative matters.”
Based on that, they argued that The National Treasury “is not in a position to maintain a highly deficient company through the contribution of hundreds of millions of pesos that come from the efforts of the inhabitants of the Argentine Republic.”
To justify this statement, they previously pointed out that in the 16 years that it has been nationalized, “The company presented marked losses, which were mitigated through the contribution of the National Treasury in order to guarantee operational continuity.”
In turn, they stated that one of the objectives of the privatization of the flag airline is “the provision of an excellent service that positively projects the image of the country and allows local and foreign users to be welcomed with hospitality, commitment and conscience thanks to the good service that the flag airline must provide”.
In that sense, they argued that “the privatization of the company and its operation under market conditions will allow better service provisionthe care of the public coffers and, mainly, that Argentines stop financing the deficit of an inefficient company.”
Furthermore, they indicated: “In a context in which poverty reaches 52.9% of the population and indigence reaches 18.1%, the national State must allocate limited fiscal resources to meet the needs of those who have the least.”
Now, privatization must be approved by Congress. Last week, the privatization of Aerolíneas Argentinas was debated in Deputies in a plenary session of Transportation and Budget commissions.
The insistence of the libertarian administration for the sale of Airlines occurs in the midst of the conflict with the aeronautical unionswho carry out forceful measures for salary demands and in rejection of layoffs.
