One of the achievements of modernism is that it freed architecture from the need to use certain styles. One of the paths taken was the emancipation of construction as an equal bearer of architectural significance. Construction as a carrier of meaning, perhaps even as art in an aesthetic sense?
This idea may seem unusual at first, as, according to popular opinion, the construction probably has more of a functional function for building. However, what is meant by this can currently be best studied using an unusual example in Upper Austria.
In the administrative building planned by the Viennese architectural firm heri&salli (Heribert Wolfmayr and Josef Saller) in Kirchham (Gmunden district) for the company SFK, the construction actually becomes the main moment of the artistic-aesthetic form of the building through its design. The building therefore not only corresponds to a long-held basic concept of the Vienna office. He also follows the company philosophy of SFK.
Coming from the carpentry trade, the family business has developed into a company that offers precise, high-quality wood and milling technologies in various areas of application. It is therefore not surprising that the design, detailed planning and execution were not only carried out in close coordination between the designers and the client. The construction itself was largely in the hands of SFK. And of course: the completed building is a veritable flagship and “model piece” for the company.
