There are people who claim to hear strange sounds that others cannot hear and it can be a frustrating situation. Some hear beeps, hums, clicks or murmurs, although in reality there is only silence. But science revealed what is the cause this to happenits symptoms and how to prevent it.

Some think this is related to mental health problems but this is not the case. According to experts, these sounds can cause trouble falling asleep, stress, fatigue, trouble concentrating, memory loss, and more.

Science revealed why some people hear noises that don’t exist

It is a pathology of the auditory system called tinnitus and affects between 15% and 20% of the population, especially older adults. Generally this develops due to underlying conditionssuch as hearing loss, an ear injury, or a circulatory system disorder. However, what really causes these sounds is a overactivity of the same brain.

At the moment there is no remedy that can relieve tinnitus, but scientists are experimenting with a technique called neuromodulation which consists of applying a low-frequency current to the brain to increase or decrease the excitability of a group of neurons, which stimulates and reprograms the nervous impulse for proper neuromuscular functioning.

Furthermore, there are other procedures to treat this pathologydepending on the underlying ear condition. These are:

  • Ear wax removal: Removing a wax blockage can reduce tinnitus symptoms.
  • Treatment of a blood vessel condition: Underlying blood vessel conditions may require medications, surgery, or other treatments to address the problem.
  • Earphones: If the cause of your tinnitus is hearing loss due to noise or age, using hearing aids may improve your symptoms.
  • Medication changes: If a medication you take seems to be the cause of your tinnitus, your doctor may recommend that you stop or reduce the use of that medication or switch to a different one.

How to prevent these sounds

Here are tips from experts to prevent tinnitus:

  • Use hearing protection: Over time, exposure to loud sounds can damage the nerves in your ears, causing hearing loss and tinnitus. Try to limit exposure to loud noises. If you can’t avoid them, wear hearing protection to help protect your ears.
  • Lower the volume: Long-term exposure to amplified music without hearing protection or listening to music at high volume with headphones can cause hearing loss and tinnitus.
  • Take care of cardiovascular health: Exercising regularly, eating well, and taking other steps to keep blood vessels healthy can help prevent tinnitus linked to obesity and blood vessel disorders.

Limit alcohol, caffeine and nicotine consumption: These substances, particularly if consumed in excess, can affect blood flow and contribute to tinnitus.
