VTV and driving record: the changes analyzed by Javier Milei’s government

The Government analyzes more changes for the automotive world. After deregulating passenger transportation days ago, it now plans to advance on the Vehicle Technical Verification (VTV) and driving record.

According to the Minister of Deregulation, Federico Sturzenegger, before the end of the year they could determine that driver registrations have longer expiration periods than the current ones. Currently, the maximum is 10 years.

On the other hand, Sturzenegger anticipated that they could also move forward with lVTV can be carried out in workshops or at dealerships.

Who should do the VTV?

The Vehicle Technical Verification (VTV) had entered into a cone of doubts about its true effectiveness and transparency, so much so that its elimination and the obligation to do so began to be mentioned, but changes began to take place in the mechanical safety and emission controls of vehicles, as well as exceptions.

The review continues: it examines key aspects such as brakes, suspension, tires, lights and gas emission systems.

And if the vehicle passes the inspection, it is given a wafer that allows it to circulate for a certain period, ensuring its suitability for transit.

It is still mandatory in the country although there are currently some exceptions that exempt certain cars from this procedure, such as:

  • -Vehicles intended for municipal services: cars and trucks used exclusively for municipal public services do not have to pay the VTV, although they must undergo a technical inspection.
  • -Fire department units: vehicles belonging to firefighters are exempt from paying the cost of the VTV, but must pass the mandatory technical inspection.
  • -Cars owned by people with disabilities: owners with a Single Disability Certificate (CUD) are exempt from paying the VTV, although the technical inspection is still mandatory.
  • -Retirees, pensioners and people over 65 years of age: holders who are retired, pensioners and receive up to two minimum retirement benefits, as well as those over 65 years of age who meet the income requirement, are also exempt from paying the procedure.

Jurisdictional differences

With new cars, there are differences regarding the regulation of the obligation to do the VTV: in CABA they must carry out the first verification four years after their registration in the Buenos Aires district, while in the province of Buenos Aires, it is mandatory starting two years from the date of registration of the vehicle.

In the Province, vehicles up to 2,500 kg pay for VTV $53,819.26, those over that weight $96,874.66, trailers, semis and trailers up to 2,500 kg $32,291.55, and those of greater weight $48,437 ,33.

Motorcycle vehicles of more than 50 cc and up to 200 cc $21,527.70, those of more than $32,291.55 and those of more than 600 cc $43,055.41.

In CABA, the costs of processing vehicles are $52,878.21 and for motorcycles, $19,882.72.

The shift is requested within the month assigned to each vehicle according to its license plate, presenting a green card, ownership title (the first time), CUIT, and driver’s ID.

The technical inspection lasts between 15 and 20 minutes, unless serious faults are detected or a re-inspection is required.

If the vehicle does not have any major faults, it is given the wafer that allows it to continue driving until the next verification.
