Poverty in CABA decreased again and reached 868,000 people in the last quarter of 2024

The poverty in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA) reached 868,000 people in the last quarter of 2024. This marks a drop of 121,000 Buenos Aires compared to the previous measurementbut 70,000 more than in the same period of 2023, according to the Institute of Statistics and Censuses of the City of Buenos Aires (IDECBA).

This is data from the report on Living Conditions in the Buenos Aires area, which indicates the second consecutive quarter-on-quarter decline in the number of poor after leaving that condition of 54,000 people in the second quarter of last year.

IDECBA released the poverty report for the third quarter of 2024.

Thus, poverty is located in 22.1% of households (299,000) and 28.1% of people (868,000), while indigence reaches 7.3% of households (99,000) and 11.0% of people (341,000).

Regarding this last stratum, there was also a decrease in quantity, due to the departure of 76,000 porteños.

On the interannual comparison, an increase was noted, since between July and September 2023 poverty rose to 25.9% in CABA, of which 10.1% corresponded to destitution and the The remaining 15.8% were linked to non-indigent poverty.

In numbers, this translates to an increase of 28,000 homes and 70,000 people in povertywhich indicate that the quarterly reduction is not enough to improve the level of the previous year.

In that sense, “poverty, and in particular indigence, reach the highest incidences of the series started in 2015 for a third quarter along with those of 2020 in the middle of a pandemic.”

The report also indicated that “within the group of households and people in poverty, those who are in extreme situations (destitution) increase, going on to represent 33.0% of households and 39.1% of people with income deficiencies”.

In turn, he specified that “33.0% of households in poverty do not have enough income to afford a basic food basket.”

Child poverty in CABA

Regarding child poverty, the IDECBA measurement indicated that “42.6% of children and adolescents (0-17 years) reside in homes in poverty (283,000 people in that age group)”. This represents growth compared to the figure from a year ago, when it reached 41.0%, but a decrease compared to 45.1% in the second quarter of 2024.

The sectors that are most impacted by poverty are households located in the South zone (35.0%) and those who have children under 14 years of age (35.6%).

Furthermore, the report specified that “households with the presence of older adults who are in poverty are located in 16.7%, below the value for the total population.”

Per capita income in CABA

Regarding the economic support of Buenos Aires families, the IDECBA study detailed that “the per capita family income of households in indigence is $88,571 and that of those who suffer from non-indigent poverty, $233,033″, so he calculated that “on average, $302,151 would be required to be transferred to each household in poverty to get out of that condition”, pointing out that “this income gap always represents, on average, 36.7% of the total basic basket”.

Added to that, the analysis explained that “the weight of the non-poor strata is reduced in the year-on-year comparison, as a counterpart to the increase in the poor strata.” He further revealed that “Within this group, the reduction in the participation of the well-off sectors stands out.

Finally, he explained that “u47,000 households and some 101,000 people from the well-off sectors descend in the income pyramid (a decrease of 3.5 pp. and 3.3 pp.) and its participation is reduced to the historical minimum (8.1% of households and 6.4% of the population)” and added that “it is also slightly reduced the middle sector, which reaches its minimum portion, along with that of 2020 in a pandemic.”
