“Emptying is closing”: workers denounce layoffs and a sharp cut at the Laura Bonaparte Hospital

This Wednesday they confirmed that contracts for 200 workers will not be renewed and the budget planned for 2025 decreased by 700 million pesos.

Although the announcement of the closure of Laura Bonaparte Hospital had generated such a rejection that it forced the Government to reverse the decision, the administration of Javier Milei move forward now with strong cuts to the institution that could put its continuity at risk. This Wednesday they confirmed that contracts for 200 workers will not be renewed and the budget planned for 2025 decreased by 700 million pesos.

“Emptying is closing,” warn hospital workers, who are preparing to take new forceful measures. Through a video published on their Instagram account, the employees shared the statement of a fired worker who, she said, was deceived by the authorities after taking the suitability exam that the Government imposed on all state workers. “I ask the authorities to please take the patients into account. I love working in this hospital, I leave everything in this hospital. So, what they are doing seems completely unfair to me. I can work elsewhere, I have my profession , but patients have no other place with the human quality with which everyone is cared for: from cleaning, maintenance, psychiatrists, administrative staff, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, There are many of us who work here to be able to give a hand to this population that is so vulnerable.“.

As resolved in the last assembly, they will adopt as forceful measures the stay in the hospital and the call to hug the building for next January 20. They also decided to promote different slogans to spread this new fight against Milei’s health adjustment, among which appear “let’s defend the population’s right to mental health”, “no layoffs, renewal of all contracts” and “emptying is closing”.

The Government carries out a brutal adjustment in Health

A total of 1,400 people will lose their jobs in the healthcare areaas confirmed by the Government itself through a statement. Among those affected, there are hospital staff – in addition to the Bonaparte- Posadas, René Favaloro and Sommer; the PAMI, the National Cancer Institute and the Superintendence of Health Services. President Javier Milei celebrated the measure on his networks: “Outside. We continue with the chainsaw. End.”

The Ministry of Health announced the cut through a statement where it argued that the decision was made “within the framework of the change of their structures and from the identification of irregularities in the hiring of personnel during the previous managementto the duplication of functions and failure to fulfill tasks.” In that sense, they state that “a strategy to optimize human resources” of the Ministry was developed.

Another of the institutions affected was the Summer Hospitalspecialized in rehabilitation and palliative care of adult patients and in the prevention of Hansen’s disease (leprosy). The year started with 150 layoffs and more are expected for the months of February and March. The situation was confirmed by the Secretary of Health of the Municipality of General Rodríguez, Gustavo Tummino, and the Secretary General of the Union of Civil Personnel of the Nation (UPCN), Horacio Bellido.

Bellido reported that, from the Nation, they were informed that “due to the public function there cannot be more than 800 workers” and since the hospital has 1,250 employees, including nurses, administrators, professionals and ambulance workers, “there are 400 left over.” In statements to the local newspaper Ladran Sancho, Tummino stated that “It is very sad to see how work power is being dynamited.”
