The president Donald Trump announced this Monday that will pardon “many” of the people accused of the January 6, 2021 attacks on the Capitol of the United States, thus fulfilling a promise often expressed during the electoral campaign.
A source familiar with his plans said earlier Monday that Trump intends to shorten the sentences of some people who attacked police and issue full pardons to people who did not commit violence.
More than 1,580 people have been criminally charged with participating in the riot, a failed attempt by Trump supporters to block Congress’ certification of the 2020 election.
Leaders of the far-right organizations Proud Boys and Oath Keepers are among those serving time in federal prison for their roles in the violence. More than 600 people have been charged with assaulting or obstructing police during the unrest, according to figures from the US Department of Justice.
Trump promised during his 2024 campaign to pardon many of the defendants, claiming they had been treated unfairly by the justice system.
Exit from the Paris Agreements
In addition, he signed this Monday, in one of his first measures after the inauguration, a decree to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate agreement for the second time, a blow to global efforts against global warming as catastrophic weather events intensify around the world.
He then signed a formal letter addressed to the UN, notifying the organization of the country’s decision to abandon the historic 2015 agreement, which seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that drive climate change.
In a series of decrees signed in his first hours as head of the Executive, the president also signed an ordinance that puts an end to teleworking for federal officials.
This decree “forces federal employees to return to working in the office full time effective immediately”said an official, as Trump brandished a document signed by him in a pavilion in the capital where thousands of his followers had gathered to celebrate his return to power.
