Néstor Bergero, the Cordoba that connects Mexico with telecommunications

This engineer from Rivera Indarte, a native of a town of the “pampa gringa” tells his career and, upon hearing it, it is possible to understand the incredible transformation that happened in the sector with the emergence of what we call ‘Information Society’.

Now, with a few months as main responsible for MXT Holdings, it faces, fundamentally, two challenges: that mobile and fixed service providers adopt the advantages offered by the networks of a neutral operator; and specify, this year, the biggest objective in the history of the company: The Mayan project.

Journalist: What stands out at the service of neutral operator networks, or neutral networks?

Néstor Bergero: I think the most important thing is that we are talking about open networks, which can be used by any company that needs to develop connectivity. In that context we set up infrastructure, which will be shared, be it fiber, towers, data centers or das – distributed antennas system – and then charge for its use. In this way, companies no longer invest in infrastructure (towers, optical fiber, data centers) and allocate more investment to electronic equipment of telecommunications networks to support the demand for connectivity, bandwidth and data storage that grows exponentially. And this is the role for companies such as MXT Holdings, because the lease of this infrastructure makes the service more efficient and, ultimately, the final customer benefits, which needs more capacities and better communication at a lower price.

Journalist: In his career, he led teams and projects in important telecommunications companies in Latin America -from CTI mobile in Argentina, passing through Iusacell in Mexico, Nextel in Brazil, and the list continues. What is the distinctive feature of MXT Holdings?

NB: Well, clearly the management has changed following technological transformations. If you look at the organization chart and the way we work, there is a horizontality that did not exist before, especially because infrastructure companies always tended to be vertical and structured.

Journalist: What is observed is an important amount of young professionals …

NB: Exact! Since I took office, 4 months ago, we incorporated talent from the hand of an idea of transformation that has to do with listening to new proposals and leading to participation. And that is also a strategic decision, because MXT Holdings is the result of the merger of two companies and two investment funds with different cultures. So, the unification we are encouraging requires to give identity to this group, starting with the purpose: contribute to a better Mexico.

We try to guarantee the excellence of customer service, develop a virtuous ecosystem composed of shareholders, clients, allies, employees and society, generate a profitable and sustainable business on 4 pillars: integrity, collaboration, execution and excellence. We are agile and try to solve our clients. And we rely on hired companies, which we call ‘Allies’, which develop the tasks of construction, operation and maintenance of the infrastructure.

Journalist: How is that dynamism conjugated with growth?

NR: “He laughs- It’s a good question. Today we have 1440 towers and 3600 kilometers of fiber optics throughout Mexico. In addition, we set up 9 days and 21 data centers in strategic points with two monitoring centers. With that amount and diversity of assets, we are incorporating people and growing with substantial investment, especially in the southeast zone of the country, where we have our most ambitious plan, the Mayan project.

I believe that the transformation that the company needs is achieved with the new talents and the incorporation of computer systems that allow automating processes and withstand artificial intelligence to implement predictive models. With that we can connect all our presence points and the infrastructure with the monitoring and administration centers, to activate services faster, invoice and manage the client portfolio in real time and automatically.

Journalist: Now that you mention it, what are the main characteristics of the Mayan project?

NR: I think that the first thing to say is that the company, for a long time, decided to invest in southeastern Mexico, which is a disadvantaged, postponed area, but that needs to connect with the country. At the same time, due to its strategic location, with ports, submarine cables and international tourism, Mexico needs to develop more telecommunications in that area.

With that perspective, this year we are covering 400 kilometers, from Mérida to Cancun, with a buried fiber optic triduct capable of initially supporting 500 Gbps of traffic. It is what we call a Backbone That, as we talked before, it serves any company that offers the Internet to the final consumer, for mobile and fixed operators that require facilities for their long -distance aggregate traffic. We replace microwaves with optical fiber for radio bases, for closed networks that companies serve, among the most important destinations.

The public sector is facilitating the work because it understands that connectivity is key and that, as neutral operators, MXT Holdings invests in this asset that improves the business and then it has the country. The clearest metaphor is the highways: as well as the roads, this kind of works that allow communication.

Journalist: One of the most delicate aspects of the project is to respect the area by its nature and the cultural value it has, I imagine.

NR: Of course. Before we started we did all the necessary studies, because undergoing a fiber optic pipeline is complex and expensive, and on the way there are cenotes, and monuments that are cultural heritage of humanity for its anthropological value. The Yucatan Peninsula is a wonderful place, and we are going to contribute the value of connectivity without altering its essence and cultural heritage.
