Marines in the north-east of Russia shelled more than 250 hectares of avalanche areas at the request of the avalanche center of the Kamchatka Territory. This was announced on Tuesday, February 15, by the information support department of the Pacific Fleet of the press service of the Eastern Military District.
It is noted that the event was held after the announcement of an increased risk of avalanches due to a cyclone that raged in Kamchatka all last week. The shelling took place in the mountainous regions of the Elizovsky municipal district on the slopes of the Vilyuchinsky volcano.
“The Marines fired from a 120-mm regimental mortar at accumulations of snow masses on hills and passes in order to achieve controlled avalanches and ensure the safety of residents of the regional center and elements of the energy system of the Kamchatka Territory,” the report says.
According to the press service, in total, the infantrymen fired over 20 shots at avalanche areas and demonstrated the skill of using a mortar when firing at maximum range in mountainous conditions.
Earlier, on February 9, the Marines of the Northern Fleet destroyed the forces of a mock enemy at a training ground near the village of Sputnik, Murmansk Region.
According to the agency, more than 30 pieces of equipment took part in the exercise, including Grad multiple rocket launchers and 122-millimeter Gvozdika self-propelled howitzers. Artillerymen worked out interaction with air and ground reconnaissance units, which gave out the exact coordinates of targets.
