In Germany, almost 70,000 women develop breast cancer every year. One of them is Sonya Kraus. The 48-year-old presenter is in the middle of chemotherapy. What she does for early detection and who “Karl Ass” is, she talks about in the 214th episode of “Today Important”.
50-year-old women in Germany know this letter: the invitation to mammography screening, the early detection of breast cancer. But often, too often, it is already too late. Breast cancer has long since not only affected women over 50 – Sonya Kraus also had to experience that. After an ultrasound scan, the TV presenter found out that she had a fast-growing breast cancer. Your luck in misfortune: The knot was still so small that the doctors could act early.
Sonya Kraus has had both breasts removed, a total mastectomy on both sides, and is still in the middle of chemotherapy. “A small preventive appointment saved my life,” says Sonya Kraus in the podcast. “Meanwhile, the oncologists can hire you so well in terms of the accompanying medication that even the chemo has lost its terror for me,” she reports. Even before her own diagnosis, she agreed to appear on the TV show “Showtime of my Life – Stars Against Cancer”. In the show, celebrities strip down in front of an audience of millions to draw attention to the topic of breast, prostate and testicular cancer prevention. The moderator is certain: “Not only do I want to encourage people to take precautions, I also want to tell them clearly that cancer can be cured and that everything is possible. […] I just want people to be braver and more confident about such a diagnosis.”
Can HIV be cured?
Unfortunately, Corona is not the only virus that kills a number of people every year. One virus in particular has lost none of its danger for 40 years: HIV. About 800,000 people die every year from its consequences, the disease AIDS. Although research makes progress in terms of prevention every year, almost 5,000 people are still infected with the virus every day and a cure is far from in sight. Or? The message came from the USA that a woman suffering from HIV could be cured with a stem cell transplant! The 60-year-old woman is only the third HIV-positive person ever to be cured. The case throws off many important insights, says Christoph Koch, head of the knowledge resort at “stern”, but unfortunately it remains an isolated case.
