Parties: Traffic light dispute about compulsory vaccination and future Corona course

In the mandatory vaccination debate, the tone also intensified within the traffic light coalition: A statement by the FDP Minister of Justice caused displeasure among the coalition partner SPD.

The dispute over general corona vaccination is also causing tensions within the traffic light coalition. Deputy SPD parliamentary group leader Dirk Wiese criticized Federal Justice Minister Marco Buschmann from the FDP after he had expressed skepticism about the project.

Buschmann’s statements were not “legally clean to the end,” said Wiese to the newspapers of the Funke media group. In addition, “colleague Buschmann” must be clear: “Only those who now increase the vaccination rate for the coming autumn/winter will then continue to have the prospect of opening.”

The Minister of Justice had said to the “Spiegel” with regard to a general obligation to vaccinate: “In my opinion, only important legal interests of the general public, such as preventing the public health system from being overloaded, can justify such an intervention. One can doubt whether this is actually still an impending danger.” But even assuming this, the question arises: “Do we need an obligation from the age of 18? Wouldn’t compulsory vaccination from the age of 50 be just as effective?»

Wiese: “Draft law is constitutional”

Wiese is one of the initiators of an application for compulsory vaccination for adults, which Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) is also striving for. “Our draft law for general vaccination from the age of 18 is constitutional,” emphasized the parliamentary group leader. “We have checked this in a large number of expert discussions and in discussions with the ministries. For this reason, Minister of Justice Buschmann should hold back when evaluating group applications from members of the German Bundestag. They also seem to be more due to the FDP’s internal discourse with Wolfgang Kubicki.”

There are currently several applications in the Bundestag on the subject of compulsory vaccination – but there is still no sign of a majority for one of them. The traffic light coalition has agreed that the deputies should deliberate and decide in a free vote without the usual group guidelines. The FDP Vice Kubicki rejects compulsory vaccination and was now convinced in an interview with the ARD capital studio: “The compulsory vaccination from the age of 18 is dead.” He was convinced that there would be no majority in the German Bundestag in April for compulsory vaccination, “in whatever form”.

There is still a need for clarification in the coalition on the question of the future Corona course after the upcoming easing. The Green health expert Janosch Dahmen again called for the federal states to be given “the legal basis for a flexible catalog of measures as an emergency kit for spring”. “If the situation deteriorates, we have to take precautions instead of aftercare,” he told the editorial network Germany (RND).

Dürr: “Human rights encroachments on stock”

FDP faction leader Christian Dürr, however, again rejected similar demands from the ranks of the federal states. The FDP is quite open to basic protection, for example for old people’s and nursing homes, he said on the ZDF program “Berlin direct”. “I only have the feeling that some CDU and CSU prime ministers actually want to reconnect the so-called basic protection through the back door with strong corona protection measures.” He argues that the Bundestag is able to act quickly in the event of new developments – and is against “encroachments on fundamental rights in reserve”.

“Restrictions on freedom are only justified as long as they are really necessary,” emphasized FDP leader Christian Lindner on the ARD program “Report from Berlin”. You will be “advised together: What is still necessary, what is not necessary?”

The federal and state governments had agreed that the vast majority of corona restrictions should be lifted by March 20th. Chancellor Scholz and the state heads of government had spoken out in favor of “low-threshold basic protection measures” beyond the date. What these should include is currently under discussion. On the table, for example, is a continuation of the mask requirement in retail and on buses and trains. “From a medical perspective, we need an FFP2 mask requirement wherever 2G rules will soon be abolished, for example in retail,” said Green politician Dahmen to the RND. From the point of view of the federal states, it should still be possible in certain areas to provide proof of the vaccination, recovered and test status.

Novavax delivery this week

The first doses of the corona vaccine from the US manufacturer Novavax are expected in Germany next week. “We expect the first delivery from Monday,” said a spokeswoman for the Federal Ministry of Health. Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) said on Friday that 1.4 million doses were expected on Monday. When the vaccine is used is a matter for the federal states. Some countries have announced vaccinations from the first week of March. It is hoped that the Novavax vaccine could be an alternative for those who have reservations about mRNA vaccines.

The chairman of the World Medical Association, Frank Ulrich Montgomery, said hesitantly: “I’m not sure that Novavax will be the “game changer” of the vaccination campaign,” he told the “Rheinische
Post Office”. «The “hard-core vaccination refusers” will not be reached with Novavax either.» Novavax has no fewer side effects than “the world’s leading mRNA vaccines,” said Montgomery. “But it can serve as a psychological bridge for those who – scientifically unfounded – have spoken out strongly against modern vaccines.”

Biontech/Pfizer and Moderna’s agents are mRNA vaccines. This made some people suspicious, because there were no approved mRNA vaccines before Corona. The Novavax vaccine, on the other hand, is based on a more traditional process.
