Expert warns of internet scams ahead of holidays

The number of online scams traditionally increases before the holidays, it can happen before February 23 and March 8, attackers can gain confidence under the guise of popular brand stores and place malicious files in electronic devices. This was announced on Monday, February 21, by Petr Kutsenko, head of Solar webProxy at Rostelecom-Solar.

According to him, sending congratulatory messages from well-known brands on the eve of the holidays is not uncommon, which is what scammers use.

“Many popular online stores and brands use holidays to remind customers about themselves, make a profitable offer, give a promotional code in honor of the holiday, etc. Attackers imitate congratulatory letters from well-known companies in order to distribute programs that perform malicious functions with their help,” — quotes his words “RIA Novosti”.

Infection of the device can occur, the expert noted, for example, when opening a pdf file with a certificate, which attackers usually pass off as a company’s promotional code.

Kutsenko also said that on Valentine’s Day, scammers sent “greeting” cards, behind which malware was hidden.

The expert urged users of electronic communication devices to carefully check the addressee and not open letters if the sender is not included in the circle of companies to which they subscribe.

Earlier on Monday, Post Bank security director Stanislav Pavlunin told Izvestia that in early 2022 there was a surge in cases when scammers luring Russians into fake investment projects began to make real payments to citizens on a card in order to increase confidence and then swindle a large amount .

According to him, due to the replenishment of the account, the potential victim increases confidence and reduces the sense of caution.
