Today the US President is addressing the American people in the “State of the Union”. But unlike in previous years, the speech probably also addressed a non-citizen: Vladimir Putin.
US President Joe Biden sent a clear message to Russian President Vladimir Putin after the Russian attack on Ukraine.
“When dictators don’t pay a price for their aggression, they cause more chaos,” Biden wanted to say after a previously circulated excerpt from his speech transcript of the State of the Union address. That is why NATO was founded.
Russia’s president thought he could split the West and NATO would not react. «Putin was wrong. We were ready,” said Biden. “Putin’s war was premeditated and unprovoked,” Biden warned. Putin has decided to reject diplomatic efforts.
Biden’s first State of the Union address is overshadowed by the war in Ukraine. He wanted to give his speech to both chambers of the US Congress in the Capitol in Washington in the evening. Biden’s spokeswoman Jen Psaki had previously announced that the president would discuss his efforts to build a global coalition “for democracy and against Russian aggression”. The US government, the EU and other Western partners had imposed unprecedented sanctions on Russia after the attack on Ukraine.
