The “future leadership” of the country and the international community must ensure “that Afghanistan will never again be used as a platform or refuge for terrorists and prevent terrorist organizations from gaining a foothold there,” the organization said on Sunday in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
During their rule from 1996 to 2001, the Taliban gave shelter to the terrorist network Al-Qaeda and its leader Osama bin Laden. The OIC announced that it would send envoys to Kabul to emphasize the importance of “peace, stability and national reconciliation”. An inclusive dialogue is needed to resolve the current crisis in Afghanistan.
The OIC also expressed concern about the humanitarian situation in the country where many people are fleeing the Taliban. It called on its member states to support relief efforts for people in need. Since the Taliban came to power a week ago, western states have been feverishly trying to evacuate their nationals and local Afghan workers who had supported them in their military operation in Afghanistan since the Taliban was overthrown in 2001.
