After only two months in office, Peru’s controversial head of cabinet resigns, triggering a government crisis.
Around two months after the new government took office in Peru, the controversial head of cabinet of the head of state Pedro Castillo has left his post.
“We accept the resignation of the President of the Council of Ministers, Guido Bellido,” said Castillo in a speech on Peruvian television. The resignation of the head of cabinet entails the resignation of all ministers. Castillo announced the swearing-in of the new cabinet for the rest of the evening.
The former village school teacher Castillo was sworn in as president at the end of July after an extremely narrow election victory and weeks of legal dispute with the defeated right-wing populist Keiko Fujimori. However, the government of the inexperienced new head of state came under pressure in the first few weeks of his tenure.
The now resigned head of cabinet Bellido, who was subordinate to the President, is being investigated for money laundering and justification of terrorism. Bellido recently threatened to nationalize gas production. Less than a month after the new government took office, Foreign Minister Héctor Béjar had resigned because of controversial statements on terrorism in the South American country.
