Federal Ministry of Health: Draft: Care contribution could increase from July

In order to keep long-term care insurance financially stable, the contributions should increase. This emerges from a draft by the Ministry of Health. But there should also be relief.

In view of the significantly higher costs for care, there should be additional relief for those in need of care, but also higher contributions. To ensure the financial stability of long-term care insurance and planned benefit adjustments, the contribution could be increased “moderately by 0.35 percentage points” on July 1, according to a draft by the Federal Ministry of Health. It is available to the German Press Agency, initially the editorial network Germany (RND) and other media reported about it. To relieve those in need of care at home, the care allowance should increase by five percent on January 1, 2024. Relief surcharges for those in need of care in the home are also to be increased.

Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) had already indicated that higher care contributions were needed to finance improvements. The contribution to statutory long-term care insurance is currently 3.05 percent of gross wages, and 3.4 percent for people without children. The SPD, FDP and Greens had also announced in the coalition agreement that they would raise the care contribution “moderately”.
