Anyone who takes to the streets in the metropolis without mouth and nose protection no longer has to expect a high fine.
After three years of the pandemic, Hong Kong is lifting one of the world’s strictest mask regulations. As the government of the Chinese special administrative region announced on Tuesday, from Wednesday a mask will only have to be worn in certain facilities such as nursing homes and hospitals.
In all other cases, the previous obligation has been lifted, according to the Hong Kong newspaper “South China Morning Post”, Prime Minister John Lee.
Hong Kong authorities had strictly enforced mask requirements during the pandemic. Anyone caught on the street or in public buildings without mouth and nose protection faced a fine of 5,000 Hong Kong dollars (around 600 euros).
At times, Hong Kong pursued a similarly strict zero-corona policy as mainland China. Incoming travelers had to spend up to 21 days in hotel quarantine. The city has now reopened and has largely returned to normal.
