Things haven’t been going well for Xi Jinping lately. Nevertheless, China’s head of state will now be elected president for the third time at the National People’s Congress. For at least another five years, this means that China’s citizens cannot expect more freedom – and relations with the West remain uncomfortable.

This weekend it’s that time again: The National People’s Congress is convening in China. Delegates from all parts of the country will flock to the Great Hall of the People on Beijing’s Tiananmen Square for nearly two weeks of celebrating the party’s work over the past year and giving the blessing to that of the coming year. The Chinese parliament has almost 3,000 members, making it the largest parliament in the world.
