Although there were instructions for a delivery of ammunition on February 23, this has not yet taken place, Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin explained in a message distributed on the Internet yesterday evening. There are two possible explanations for this delay: “the usual bureaucracy or treason”.
Wagner mercenaries have been fighting for the eastern Ukrainian town of Bakhmut for months. In a video message distributed over the weekend, Prigozhin warned that if the Wagner group “withdrew to Bakhmut now, the entire front would collapse.” The front then threatens to shift “to the borders of Russia, maybe even further”.
In the past few weeks, Prigozhin had repeatedly and severely criticized the Russian army leadership and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and complained about the lack of ammunition deliveries.
