Human rights: Amnesty warns of dangers for women in the Ukraine war

Because many men are conscripted into military service, women and children in particular are fleeing the Ukraine. The women who stay are sometimes threatened with bad things – rape is also a weapon of war.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the human rights organization Amnesty International called for solidarity with women in Ukraine.

“Women are consistently at the forefront of this brutal Russian war of aggression – be it as soldiers, doctors and nurses, volunteers, carers, internally displaced persons, refugees and all too often as casualties and survivors,” said Amnesty International Germany Deputy Secretary-General Julia Duchrow. In addition, they are increasingly exposed to sexualized and gender-specific violence and health risks.

Amnesty International calls on the international community to support women who suffered human rights abuses in the Ukraine war. In addition, the perpetrators of crimes under international law must be prosecuted. According to the UN agency UNHCR, more than eight million refugees from Ukraine have been registered in Europe. Women and children make up a large proportion of the refugees.
