Ukraine War: Reznikov: Need a million artillery shells

According to the Ukrainian Defense Minister, up to 100,000 shells are needed every month in Ukraine. The EU wants to make one billion euros available for ammunition – but that’s not enough.

The Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov has described the previous EU plans for new ammunition deliveries to his country as insufficient.

Ukraine needs a million artillery shells and probably around four billion euros would have to be made available for this, Resnikov said today at an informal meeting with the defense ministers of the EU states in Sweden. It is about being able to launch further counter-offensives against the attackers from Russia.

The EU Commission and EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell had previously proposed in a discussion paper for the defense ministers’ meeting near Stockholm that around one billion euros should be made available for ammunition deliveries to Ukraine. The money is to come from the so-called European Peace Facility. It is a financing instrument through which the EU already supplies arms and equipment and supports the training of the Ukrainian armed forces.

90,000 to 100,000 bullets per month

Resnikov today described the amount of one billion euros as “not enough”. He pointed out that his country needs 90,000 to 100,000 shells a month.

Decisions on further action by the EU are expected in the second half of March. Then there are regular meetings of foreign and defense ministers and heads of state and government in Brussels.
